Self-Employed Persons

For foreign nationals with relevant self-employment experience

In order to be eligible for permanent residence under the self-employed persons class, section 88(1) of the Regulations requires you to have relevant self-employment experience in athletics, cultural activities ~~or managing a farm~~.

The following are the minimum requirements for relevant self-employment experience

1. Cultural Activities

Two one-year periods of self-employment experience in cultural activities

Two one-year periods of experience in participation in cultural activities at a world-class level

A combination of one-year periods of experience for the above two requirements

2. Athletics

Two one-year periods of self-employment experience in athletics

Two one-year periods of experience in participation in athletics at a world-class level

A combination of one-year periods of experience for the above two requirements

~~3. Purchase and Management of a Farm~~

~~Two one-year periods of experience in the management of a farm~~

Without the relevant experience, your application will be refused.

In addition to getting points for relevant experience, section 102(1) will issue points for your age, education, language proficiency and adaptability.

Provinces can also select candidates for becoming self-employed under the Provincial Nominee Program. Each province's self-employed program has their own criteria. It is advisable to research the requirements of the province you would like to be selected for to see if you are eligible.
