Visitor Visa

For foreign nationals who wish to visit Canada temporarily

Want to travel to Canada and see what this vast country has to offer? The visitor visa may be right for you!

A visitor visa is a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) which allows foreign nationals to enter and stay in Canada temporarily. These visas generally authorize a foreign national to remain in Canada for six months, or any other time specified by an immigration officer.

Most people need either a TRV or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to travel to Canada. Some nationalities, such as US citizens, are exempt from needing either. To find out if you need a visa to travel to Canada, check out the IRCC website.

A visitor visa does not authorize a foreign national to work or study.

The basic requirements for the immigration officer to issue a TRV is the foreign national

applied for a TRV in accordance with the Regulations
has convinced the officer they will leave Canada by the end of the period authorized for their stay
holds a valid travel document
is in good health
has not criminal or immigration-related convictions
has enough money to support themselves while visiting
