Canada to Support Iranian Temporary Residents

On February 23, 2023, IRCC announced its new measures it will implement to assist Iranian temporary residents in Canada. Canada is dedicated to helping Iranian families remain together and to protecting Iranians who are currently temporary residents of the country. Some would prefer to stay in Canada longer rather than go back home right now in view of the political strife which is currently ongoing in the country of Iran.

New initiatives to assist Iranian temporary residents in Canada were announced today by the Hon. Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Natural Resources, on behalf of the Hon. Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship.

New Measures

These changes will make it simpler for Iranians to renew their temporary status in Canada and to switch between temporary streams starting on March 1, 2023. Iranians will be able to continue their studies, employment, or family visits by requesting a new permit from within Canada. For Iranians currently residing in Canada, an exclusive open work permit pathway will be made available. Applications from Iranians residing in Canada will also be given particular consideration.

In addition, the Canadian government is cancelling some processing fees for Iranians who want to stay longer in the country. It also waives payments for passports and permanent resident travel documents for Canadian citizens and permanent residents who want to leave Iran.
