Canada Immigration Plan for 2022-2024

The Government of Canada released their Immigration Levels Plan for 2022 to 2024. In this plan, they have stated they intend to welcome approximately 1.3 million newcomers to Canada over these next three years. In this post, we will go into more detail as to what this means regarding your future immigration objectives.

Summary of the Canada Immigration Plan

The immigration plan outlined the number of newcomers they would like to welcome to Canada based on the immigration category. The immigration categories are: Economic, Family, Refugees and Protected Persons, and Humanitarian and Others. The table below summarizes the number of immigrants per category:

Under the Economic immigration category, approximately 34-35% of the newcomers will come to Canada through a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). This is a largest proportion out of any of the other Economic Immigration pathways. This indicates that in the coming years, Canada will put more focus on ensuring that newcomers immigrate to provinces where they are most needed. Over these three years, they intend to invite 262,500 applicants with a PNP and 243,150 applicants through a Federal High Skilled category. The Federal High Skilled category is comprised of the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) and Canadian Experience Class (CEC) who are invited to apply under Canada's Express Entry program.

Under the Family category, they intend to welcome 25,000 parents and grandparents to Canada in 2022. This is good news for those of you who have been waiting for IRCC to open their Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP). In 2021, some candidates who entered the pool of interest in 2020 were invited in 2021. This was due to the pandemic which lowered the priority of the PGP. Now in 2022, we can confidently say that this program will open again, however we do not know when exactly the instructions will be posted on IRCC's website.

Conclusion

Canada is ready to proceed forward with higher immigration goals as stated in the Canada Immigration Levels Plan for 2022-2024. Due to Canada's labour shortage and low birthrate, the Government of Canada seeks to address these issues through immigration. This is great news for those who are interested in immigrating to Canada in the future. Due to the high number of PNP invitations they intend to issue, it would be wise to focus on the PNPs that you would be most eligible for. For permanent residents and Canadian citizens interested in family sponsorship, keep yourself up-to-date with news regarding the Parents and Grandparents Program.
